When motoring we suggest that VectaVane be demounted (and temporarily hung on - say the taffrail).
The split pins holding the pulleys will also pull out if large forces occur.
Stern view of Boat, the actual configuration will of course, depend on circumstances, position of existing fittings and shape of Stern.
The above sketch is to give some idea of the attachment of VectaVane.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR FIT VECTAVANE WHILE UNDER WAY.
VectaVane MUST have an unobstructed airflow to the vane.
Difficulties experienced when sailing to windward are almost certainly as a result of turbulent or reduced airflow around obstructions shielding the windvane.
Please check no down draught from mainsail is affecting the vane and remember that air leaves a "sheeted in" mains'l in a roughly fore and aft direction.
Don't sit between vane and airflow (don't laugh - it's easy to do, I've done it - sitting there with me calculator and pencils not understanding why the boat was going round in circles).
Examples of Forces available to your tiller at Varying Boat Speeds (approx).
2 knots ...... 10lbs. (4.5kgs)
4 knots ...... 18lbs. (8.15kgs)
6 knots ...... 32lbs. (14.5kgs)
Mounting Bracket, on some boats with lightly built hulls we would recommend that plywood pads be fitted both sides of the outboard bracket clamps in order to spread the load.
The Bracket is specially designed to "give" a little in it's clamps should undue forces be applied to it. We feel this is to be preferred to ripping a section from the stern of your boat.
Although we boast that VectaVane needs little or no maintainance, a bit "o" oil here and there occasionally and a wash with fresh water will help.

Should the self-steering strike an obstacle in the water while under way, a KICK-UP facility allows the whole support tube and paddle assembly to swing up, special ball joints on the linkage will allow this movement without damage. When the obstacle is cleared, the assembly is clipped back in position and the selected course continued.
May be a good idea to attach a lanyard to the bottom end of the paddle tube. This easily allows the return of the paddle assembly should it be displaced by an obstacle in the water.
